T.J. McConnell: The Inspirational Journey of an NBA Underdog
In the world of professional basketball, few stories are as compelling and uplifting as that of T.J. McConnell. Undersized, undrafted, and often overlooked, McConnell’s rise from a small-town Pennsylvania standout to a crucial contributor in the NBA Finals is a testament to grit, persistence, and heart. His journey serves not only as an inspiration to athletes but also as a reminder that determination and belief in oneself can overcome almost any obstacle.
Who is T.J McConnell
Born in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, McConnell was raised in a basketball-centric household. His father, Tim McConnell, was his high school coach at Chartiers Valley, where T.J. emerged as one of the most prolific scorers in Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) history. As a senior, he averaged 34.2 points, 9.1 assists, and 8.2 rebounds per game, while setting a WPIAL single-season scoring record with 1,062 points. His achievements earned him Player of the Year honors and, later, induction into the WPIAL Hall of Fame.
McConnell’s path was shaped early on by the influence of his father, Tim McConnell, who coached him in high school and held him to an exceptionally high standard. As T.J. recalled in multiple interviews, his father often pushed him harder than any other player—not out of favoritism, but out of belief in his potential.
That effort carried him into his collegiate career at Duquesne University, where he was named Atlantic 10 Freshman of the Year in 2011. During his time with the Dukes, he stood out for his defensive instincts and playmaking, finishing among the nation’s leaders in steals. Still, T.J. yearned for a greater challenge, transferring to the University of Arizona in 2012. After redshirting a year, he played a pivotal role in leading the Wildcats to back-to-back Elite Eight appearances, earning All-Pac-12 and All-Defensive Team honors.
The NBA: A Path Less Traveled
Despite a decorated college career, McConnell went undrafted in the 2015 NBA Draft. Nevertheless, he secured a Summer League opportunity with the Philadelphia 76ers and quickly impressed the coaching staff. Through hard work and a high basketball IQ, he earned a spot on the roster and soon became a fan favorite. McConnell made history as the first Sixer to record a triple-double off the bench and later set an NBA record with nine steals in a single half.
In 2019, McConnell signed with the Indiana Pacers, where his impact as a steadying presence off the bench became even more pronounced. Whether mentoring younger players or providing energy in critical moments, his role grew in both visibility and value. After overcoming a wrist injury in 2021, he returned to the court with the same fire that had defined his career. In 2023, McConnell signed a four-year, $45 million extension, cementing his place as a core part of the Pacers’ rotation.
McConnell’s efforts culminated in a breakout 2023–2024 postseason. Scoring a career high, 20 points in game in game six of the first round of the 2024 playoffs. A year later his leadership and tenacity would help the Pacers reach the finals for the first time in 25 years.
During the 2025 Finals, T.J. McConnell made history by becoming the first player to score 60 points, grab 15 rebounds, dish out 25 assists, and record 10 steals—all while coming off the bench. In a pivotal Game 6, over a 24-minute span, he posted 12 points, nine rebounds, and four steals, helping the Pacers secure a crucial win and force a Game 7 against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Despite his incredible performance, McConnell’s father, Tim, still had some feedback during his son’s live postgame interview.
“Just disappointing he missed those two foul shots in the beginning,” he joked with reporters. “I kept saying, man, I wish he’d made those two foul shots. But he recovered, and we won the game, so I can forget about the foul shots. Anything can happen in Game 7. We’re going to OKC to try and win a world championship—and my son’s a part of it. I can’t believe it.”
Impact
How does he have such an impact off the bench? In McConnell’s eyes, it all comes back to one thing: effort.
“I genuinely believe playing hard is a skill—because if it wasn’t, everyone would do it,” he told The Young Man and the Three podcast.
T.J. McConnell’s path to the NBA wasn’t paved with early accolades or a first-round draft selection. Instead, it was built on years of unrelenting effort, self-belief, and an unshakable will to succeed. His story is more than just a sports narrative—it’s a life lesson in perseverance.
For anyone who has ever been underestimated, T.J. McConnell’s career offers this simple truth: hustle, heart, and determination can take you anywhere
