Facing off with Cystic Fibrosis: Logan McGovern’s Journey to the PLL
Logan McGovern would start and end his the same way each day as a young kid. Sitting in front of the TV with a nebulizer covering his face. For about two hours each day Mcovern would sit trying to clear the mucus from his lungs. When McGovern was a newborn he was diagnosed with Cystic fibrosis.A condition is a progressive, genetic disease that affects the lungs, pancreas, and other organs. The condition causes mucus to build up in lungs trapping germs, and Kim leads to lung failure. Despite his lungs only operating at 60% most of the childhood, nothing could prevent McGovern from excelling on the Lacrosse field.
A Champion
Growing up, McGovern had to battle to stay on Lacrosse due to his lung Capacity However, when he wasOn the field, he proved he had talent, scoring, passing and Helping his team win in whatever way possible. In high school McGovern was introduced to a new drug that drastically improved his lung function. With this new drug he excelled. By the end of his senior year, he was the 2018 Connecticut lacrosse player of the year and became a three time state champion, helping to lead his team to an 80 and five record in four years.
The next level
With such stellar numbers in high school McGovern at just 5 foot 7 had Numerous offers to play in college, but chose to Play the cross at Bryant College in Rhode Island.
At Bryant he continued his winning ways. Although He had to red shirt his freshman Due to injury, he was able to make up for the lost time.And his junior season heSet the program record for single-season assist with 35, adding 19 goals in just 14 years played.
With two more years of eligibility due to COVID-19 and redshirting his freshman year McGovern transferred to University of North Carolina where he burst on the scene scoring 34 goals and 24 assists Just 14 games.
The next year he would continue to improve being named Team captain and scoring 25. Goals with 29 assists.Check out some of his highlights below.
After his time at UNC, he went undrafted in the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) draft but later signed with the New York Atlas. Since joining the team in July, he scored three goals, two of which came in his PLL debut..
The Advocate
Off the field McGovern has partnered with the Boomer Esiason Foundation athlete the organization is working to raise money for research and fight Cystic fibrosis. The foundation has partnered with over 7000 athletes and has raised 14 million dollars for the cause.
McGovern’s story is a great reminder of what can be possible. As a kid it was unclear if he would be able to play highschool Lacrosse due to his symptoms and now he is a professional. You never know what can happen if you keep putting in the work!
