In professional sports, the off-season is always an exciting time for players and fans alike. From contract negotiations to trades, the off-season is a time for getting deals done. One of the coolest deals agreed upon this WNBA basketball off-season comes off the court, between young superstar Angel Reese and the company, Cash App. It’s a deal that will have an impact far beyond the court.

Who is Angel Reese?

Reese’s journey to the WNBA began about a half-hour outside of Baltimore in Randallstown, Maryland. Learning the game from her mom, Reese excelled early. In high school at Saint Francis Academy, she played varsity all four years, averaging 18 points and 11 rebounds per game over the course of her career. By the time she graduated in 2020, she was a five-star recruit and ranked second in the country in the class of 2020.

The Bayou Barbie

Reese decided to stay in-state for college, playing at the University of Maryland for two years, where she helped the Terps reach the Final Four in 2022. She then transferred to LSU, where she finished her career. In 2023, she helped lead the Tigers to a national championship, earning her the nickname Bayou Barbie. By the time she was eligible for the 2024 WNBA Draft, she had racked up 830 career points—third most in program history—and had added SEC Player of the Year to her resume.

Reese was drafted 7th overall by the Chicago Sky. In her rookie season, she averaged 13 points, 13 rebounds, and over one steal per game before a wrist injury ended her season.

The Perfect Assist

In 2023, Reese launched the Angel C. Reese Foundation, with the objective of ensuring equal opportunities for all girls in sports, education, financial literacy, and other areas where girls have historically been overlooked.

With the foundation’s focus on financial literacy, Cash App and the foundation joined forces. Reese will take part in Cash App’s That’s Money financial literacy campaign, which aims to raise awareness about the importance of financial literacy. Cash App is also helping to renovate a community basketball court in Baton Rouge.

“I loved being part of this campaign because it was an opportunity to show people the importance of investing in themselves and feeling in control of their money,” she said. “I’m proud to partner with Cash App and am grateful for their continued support of my efforts to make an impact both on and off the court.”

With a great rookie season Reese proved the sky is the limit for her on the court, but it’s her work  off the court that will have a long lasting impact way past her playing days.
