The Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson broke the tibia and fibula in his leg during a 49-7 rout of the Dallas Cowboys. The loss of the former Michigan Wolverines star was keenly felt by the Lions organization, but the impact he has on the people of Michigan off the field was on full display in the days following his injury.

Hutch’s Heroes

While Hutchinson was in college at Michigan, he and the team often visited Mott Children’s Hospital, spending time with the kids and brightening their days. He was drafted by the Lions with the second overall pick after a stellar college career in which he recorded 81 solo tackles, 18.4 sacks, and finished second in Heisman voting. Being drafted by his hometown team allowed him to continue visiting the facility and raising awareness for the patients.

Before his first NFL game, Hutchinson wrote the name of a patient at Mott on his water bottle to raise awareness for the child’s GoFundMe campaign. To keep the stories of the patients in the public eye, Hutchinson created Hutch’s Heroes, a non-profit clothing brand aimed at raising funds for the organization. These kids came to be known as Hutch’s Heroes.

Coming Full Circle

When Hutchinson went down with his injury, the children of Mott created a video wishing him well in the best way possible. Check out the incredible here

The well wishes seem to be helping. Hutchinson took to YouTube a week after his surgery to give his fans an update on his recovery. Check it out below.

Although Hutchenson has a long road to recovery ahead of him, with the community at Motts Children’s hospital behind him there’s no doubt he will come back better than ever.
