In a sport built on tradition, Jen Pawol is rewriting the rules. Few women have ever attempted the climb to the top of professional baseball officiating, but Pawol made it, completing a long and winding journey to become the first woman in modern history to umpire a Major League Baseball game.

A Love for the Game, Born Early

Pawol had dreams of playing Little League, begging her parents to do so, but had to settle for softball, where she was a star catcher, earning a scholarship to Hofstra University. In college, she decided to umpire softball games to earn some extra cash. She earned a degree in art, and while she was teaching, she continued to develop her skills as an umpire. Reflection on her journey, Pawol said, “This started in my playing days as a catcher and transformed over into an umpire, and I think it’s gotten even stronger as an umpire. Umpiring is for me, it’s in my DNA. It’s been a long, hard journey”she told reporters. 

She pursued her dream of umpiring full-time, attempting to work countless tournaments and attending umpire camps to refine her skill. Pawol made a concerted effort, working games tirelessly, in order to shatter the glass ceiling. MLB umpire Ted Barrett had noticed Pawol and invited her to a one day MLB umpiring camp. From there, she earned a scholarship to the league’s umpiring academy. This moment was a major step forward in her dream of reaching the big leagues.

Chasing History in a Male-Dominated Field

There have been women before who attempted to reach the top, but no one was ever successful. Pawol had learned from those who came before her, as mentors and as friends, however they were clearly ahead of their time. The aforementioned women have climbed the ranks of the Minor Leagues, others have seen Spring Training action, but Pawol had her sights set on history. 

Pawol had taken the path of every other umpire that has reached the majors, grinding her way from Single-A all the way up to Triple-A, and eventually received the monumental call. Baseball is a sport that has been around for nearly 200 years, with a woman never reaching the climax of the game and reaching the Major League level. “Wow, just incredible, the dream came true… the dream actually came true today,” Pawol told reporters following her debut.

More Than a Milestone

Jen Pawol didn’t just break into baseball, she broke through every barrier that said she couldn’t. Her presence behind the plate is more than a personal milestone, it’s a powerful reminder that the game is evolving, and so is the understanding of who belongs in it. With every pitch she calls, she opens the door a little wider for the next woman chasing that same dream. Because in a sport built on rules, Jen Pawol is proving that some are meant to be rewritten.
